I solved my own problem. Here's the story, in case anyone else has a similar issue:
Apparently, my information was sent to Facebook after I became a member of a different site. Somehow, someone set up an account with the info. That person has been using the account. Today, I got another e-mail from Facebook regarding a friend request (from someone I know who assumed the account was mine because of the e-mail) to the account. I pulled up the link that lets you manage your friend requests. I typed in my e-mail address and said I had forgotten my password. Using the code sent to my e-mail, I reset the password and logged in. Then, I was able to deactivate the account. Problem solved.
