Usually you have either wood boring bumble bees and or carpenter ants. Termites also do damage to wood.

Bee's leave a distinct circle shaped hole from their stinger, because they tend to nest in those holes in the wood.

Carpenter ants bore in wood as well. They usually like trees though.

Termites bite through any thing wooden and are dangerous in and around the home. If you have them in your home, i suggest you get someone out there immediately to get rid of the pests before they damage your home permanently.

Almost all groups of insects have at least some members that live in trees. It is estimated that there are many millions of types of insects, perhaps up to 30 million or more, and this estimate was made by studying the canopy of the tropical rainforest. Thus, the answer is that most types of insects live in trees. The largest group of tree-dwelling insects would undoubtably be beetles, which comprise the largest group of insects, and the largest group of animals, in the world.

An insect is the type of bug that eats plant roots. Common examples include cicada nymphs, clearwing moth caterpillars, cutworms, ground pearl scales, Japanese beetle grubs, June beetle grubs, mole crickets, Phoenix billbugs, raspberry cane borers, root aphids, root maggots, rose chafer grubs, and weevil grubs. Cutworms also may be included if they are other than the non-root-eating climbing, spotted, or variegated varieties.

The bugs that I am certain with that eat the bark on the tree are termites. Since they eat wood, that means they eat the bark too since people use tree's and tree bark to make many different things like: pencils, paper, etc.

Predation of above- and below-ground parts, exterior and interior parts is the way that insects attack crops. The type of mouthparts, for instance, as chewing, piercing/sipping, siphoning or sponging, predicts whether roots or shoots will be attacked. For example, piercing/sipping mouthparts largely will be associated with breaking through leaf, stalk and stem exteriors to access internal, nutrient-rich xylem or sugar-rich phloem.
