  • The orbicularis oculi is a muscle in the face that closes the eyelids. It arises from the nasal part of the frontal bone, from the frontal process of the maxilla in front of the lacrimal groove, and from the anterior surface and borders of a short fibrous band, the medial palpebral ligament.
  • The occipitofrontalis or epicranius is a muscle which covers parts of the skull. It consists of two parts or bellies: The occipital belly, near the occipital bone, and the frontal belly, near the frontal bone. Assisted by the occipital belly, the frontal belly draws the scalp back which raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead
  • The Procerus is a small pyramidal slip of muscle deep to the superior orbital nerve, artery and vein.It helps to pull that part of the skin between the eyebrows downwards, which assists in flaring the nostrils. It can also contribute to an expression of anger. It is supplied by the buccal branch of CN VII and can produce transverse wrinkles.

Virtually all facial expressions cause wrinkles to form. That is one reason using some injected chemicals for wrinkles freeze a muscle or three and cause that person to be ubable to make certain facial expressions. Muscle types?

Muscles perform four important body functions: maintain body posture, stabilize the joints, provide mobility, and generate heat that the body requires. The body contains three types of muscle to perform these functions:• Smooth muscle - involuntary muscle found in the walls of body organs; functions without conscious control• Cardiac muscle - involuntary muscle found only in the walls of the heart; functions without conscious control• Skeletal muscle - attaches to and covers the bony skeleton to provide movement of the body; the only type of muscle under voluntary or conscious controlReviewed ByReview Date: 10/06/2008Thomas N.
