Hi is it a k8 or k16 (8v) (16V) on the k8 engine the cam sprocket marking should line up with the cylinder head top surface pointing toward the front of the car. While the crankshaft pully's marking should line up with the TDC pointer visable from the front of the engine looking down behind the pully. TDC refers to top. dead. centre the highest point the no1 piston reaches on it's way up and down the cylinder. Removing the no1 spark plug and using a screwdriver through the whole will ensure you are at tdc. The distributor rotor should be facing the no1 ht lead when timing as you should be on the compression stroke

To set the timing on a 1996 Land Rover Discovery, first ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for cylinder one. Then, remove the timing cover to access the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft. Align the timing marks according to the specifications in the service manual, and adjust the distributor if necessary to ensure the ignition timing is correct. Finally, reassemble the timing cover and check the timing with a timing light to confirm it is set properly.
Set your #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke.
what timing are you trying to set? the cam timing or the ignition timing?
Timing is set by the PCM and not adjustable.
align the timing marks as the cams are being installed. DON'T FOOL WITH IT...... IF YOU HAVE A 2001 L SERIES, THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TIMING CHAIN IS COVERED BY A RECALL ISSUED IN JANUARY 2008. IF YOU ALREADY HAD THE REPAIR DONE, THEY WILL REIMBURSE YOU.
Timing is set by the PCM and is not adjustable.
