Unless you have the electronic climate control that automatically adjusts the temperature based on cabin temps, there really is not a "heater and cooler sensor" on the Taurus/Sable.

9 time out of 10, the heater circuit internal to the sensor has failed. Replace the sensor.

Remove the two bolts holding the sensor in place remove the wire that sends data. Finally, replace the crankshaft positioning sensor.
