Algonquian is not a tribe, it's a large grouping of tribes that speak Algonquian languages. Tribes in the Powhatan confederacy, which Pocahontas was part of, spoke an Algonquian dialect. That language is now extinct, though there are efforts to reconstruct it, which means they have an approximation of it based on historical word lists and still-existing Algonquian dialects.
Pocahontas was Algonquian. Her father was Powhatan, the chief of the Algonquians.
she was in the powhatan tribe. her father was the chief.
It was Captain John Smith.
Pocahontas and her tribe
Pocahontas, whose real name was Matoaka, was the daughter of Powhatan. Pocahontas was actually a nickname meaning spoiled child. When she was seventeen, Matoaka was abducted and kept imprisoned in Jamestown. Only when she agree to marry John Rolfe was she released.
Algonquian is not the name of a tribe, but a very large family of distantly related languages spoken across most of North America. The game of rackets was played by the six Iroquois tribes and by the Ojibwe, Abenaki, Cree, Delaware, Iowa, Menominee, Miami, Missisauga, Nipissing, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Sauk and Fox and Shawnee (all of them, apart from the Iroquois, classed as Algonquian tribes).
An Algonquian is another word for an Algonquin - a member of an aboriginal North American tribe, closely related to the Odawa and Ojibwe, who reside mostly in Quebec - or the family of languages belonging to these people.
Algonquian group
It symbolizes the tribe she was from. Pocahontas was a Algonquian women.
Algonquian (the same tribe the historical figure, Pocahontas was part of)
Pocahontas believed in peace and kindness. She just wanted her tribe( Algonquian Tribe) and the white men to like each other and have peace and trust with in.
algonquian
Pocahontas was/is a Powhatan, an Algonquian tribe who lived in and around modern day Virginia.
Most likely Algonquian.
No one knows what tribe Pocahontas belonged to. Nearly every Powhatan tribe has claimed to be the tribe of Pocahontas at one point or another. Currently, two tribes, the Mattaponi and the Patawomeck claim to be the tribe of Pocahontas through her mother. Numerous Powhatan tribes are now extinct and can no longer claim the honor. When the existing Powhatan tribes get together to write about their common history (example: We're Still Here: Contemporary Virginia Indians Tell Their Stories (2000, 2001, 2006) they never state which tribe is the tribe of Pocahontas's mother because they do not agree on this. The True Story of Pocahontas (which a previous poster here used as a source) has numerous errors and its authors have serious credibility issues. It should not be used as an authoritative source. Pocahontas may have been Mattaponi, but we'll never know.
She talk john smith the basics of algonquian, but not in depth. HOPE THIS HELPED:)
The short answer is no, not really.Pocahontas was from a nation of Indians, the Powhatan. It was composed of tribes which spoke an Algonquian language. That quia in the word is important it denotes a family of related languages. The Europeans encountered a tribe called Algonquin. They latter encountered tribes that spoke similar languages. Powhatan was just such a similar language. To make things more complicated the term "Algonquin Indian" has come to denote practically any Indian nation of the eastern woodlands that spoke an Algonquian language. This is not technically correct but it is very common. So to review.Pocahontas was not an Algonquin indian. The Powhatan spoke a language that was a member of the Algonquian language family.
