This beautiful short work, Sonata-fantaisie in G sharp minor, was completed in 1886 and dedicated some years later to the composer's early love Natalia Sekerina, whom he first met in 1891. It consists of a poetic Andante introduction and an agitated Allegro vivace. The level of technical difficulty belies the early age (14) at which it was composed. It was first published in the USSR in 1940 and is included in the recent Koenemann edition volume 7. There are fine recordings by Roberto Szidon (DG), Marc-Andre Hamelin and Stephen Coombs (both Hyperion).
