It depends on the animal. The thoracic vertebrae are those of the "chest" and attach to the ribs. In the dog and cow for instance, there are 12 (same number as the ribs) but there are 18 in the horse (also the same number as the ribs).
I think there's a mistake somewhere in the Thoracic vertebrae, where you stated 17. Adding the total vertebrae above gives a total of 49, whereas it was stated that the total vertebrae of chicken is 39!. Could that be a typographical error in the computation of thoracic vertebrae of chicken?
Dogs have a total of thirty vertebrae in their spines. They have seven cervical vertebrae, thirteen thoracic vertebrae, seven lumbar vertebrae and three sacral vertebrae.
Fifty four (54) vertebrae for the typical horse. Cervical vertebrae: 7: the neck Thoracic vertebrae: 18 : the back, above rib cage Lumbar vertebrae: 6: the back, just above and forward of rear hip bones Sacral vertebrae (5 fused together - sacrum): just above and behind rear hip bones Coccygeal vertebrae (average 18): the tail source: http://www.kersur.net/~santa/skeletalsystem.html source: http://www.allabouthorses.com/horse-health/injuries/horse-anatomy.html
Cervical Vertebrae- has transverse foramen, and a bifid tip of spinous process Thoracic Vertebrae- Has coastal facets on the sides of the body Lumar Vertebrae- has no transverse foramen, no bifurcated tip, and no facets on the sides of the body

Vertebrae are divided into sections: the atlas and axis account for the first cervical vertebrae, of which there are 7 in total; there are 12 thoracic vertebrae, 7 lumbar vertebrae, 1 sacrum (5 separate vertebrae in a baby), and 1 coccyx (4 separate vertebrae in a baby).
The thoracic vertebrae, of which there are 12.

the thoracic spine is above the lumbar spine which means ALL thoracic vertebrae are superior to the lumbar vertebrae.
The ribs articulate with the thoracic vertebrae. The thoracic vertebrae also articulate with each other.
Thoracic vertebrae are attached to a pair of ribs
Chimpanzees have 13 thoracic vertebrae, the same number as humans.
The body or centrum of the thoracic vertebrae are heart shaped. There are twelve thoracic vertebrae in humans and they are located in the chest.
Dogs have a total of thirty vertebrae in their spines. They have seven cervical vertebrae, thirteen thoracic vertebrae, seven lumbar vertebrae and three sacral vertebrae.
12 vertebrae have ribs attatched
The thoracic vertebrae are found in the chest region of the body. Humans have twelve thoracic vertebrae which are located between the cervical and lumbar vertebrae.
All ribs are attached in the back to the thoracic vertebrae.
