to remove the starter on the 4.3 Blazer, remove all the bolts EXCEPT THE UPPERMOST ONE on the driver's side, on the flywheel housing. this will allow you to slide the housing about 1/2" - 3/4" back, and the starter will drop free. then it's a few twist and jiggling so you can get to the lugs that hold the wiring in place.
it's easier to get the starter bolts back in if you put the housing back to where it will keep the starter from dropping.
I just went thru this yesterday - I looked it up on the internet; "remove starter on 4.3 Blazer".
On the 4x4 models you will need to remove the crossmember in most cases to get access to the starter. Have a safe way of supporting the engine while you do this.
What is the trick for removing the starter, from the engine, I have the starter unbolted but has a small compartment that stops me removing it from the engine?
there is a hidden bolt that is a pain to get at. but if all blots are removed, you need to just figure out how to twist the starter till it will drop down and out. remember how it comes out as this is how you will have to put it back in
Discconect the negative cable from the battery for a few minutes and that should do the trick
It's a real pain. I had to bend the head of a wrench to get at one of the 4 bolts holding it in. If you have the engine out, it's real easy. A lot of times the starter is the not the problem on these bikes. The starter bendix that is behind the clutch is the problem if you hear grinding when you try to use the starter.
A wheelie is a good starter trick.
take off primary cover and remove starter thru bolt
Push it back as far as you can then push it up or pull it down until the "nose" of the starter clears and remove the starter, you will have to reverse the way you removed it to re-install it.

After everything is unbolted use a pry bar and shake it from the rear tranny. there is also little bolts that bolt the dust plate to the engine block.
You need a long extension (3 feet) and a sloppy socket. This whill enable you ly on the ground just below the drivers side door and loosen the bolts/nuts. Hope this helps.
After removing the pinion nut, a 2 jaw puller should do the trick.
