After World War I, two major political contenders were present in Germany: Nazism and Communism.
Austria was part of Germany for a brief period just before the end of World War One. However, after the war the Treaty of Versailles prohibited the two countries from joining together. The 1930s saw the rise of National Socialism (Nazism) in Germany as well as in Austria. In 1938 Germany annexed Austria, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, amidst widespread (though controversial) support of the action from both countries.

There are two accepted spellings: Nazism and Naziism (following the Nazi principles, or the Nazi Party). The form with one I is usually pronounced (nat-sism) while the form with two I's is pronounced (nat-see-ism). Otherwise they are synonymous.

For two reasons: they had seen that keeping Germany poor and disorganized (as after the end of WW 1) only led to general resentment, to the rise of parties like the Nazi party and to a resumption of that earlier war. Secondly, the Allies quickly realized that they would need Germany as a first line of defence in case the USSR would try to extend its influence over - or even try to conquer - western European countries.
