Archeologists have discovered iron nails in the heel bones in the remains of people who were crucified. This material would have been strong enough to be driven through bone and wood and would also hold the weight of the body.
In 1968, in an excavated tomb located just NE of Jerusalem, the remains were found of a Jew who was executed in the first century. As shown by subsequent studies, an iron nail 11.5 cm (4.5 in.) long was still piercing the right heel bone. This nail may be similar to the nails employed by the Roman soldiers to impale Jesus Christ.
We do not know what size the nails were that held Jesus to the cross. These nail would have been hand forged as they did not have that type of manufacturing in that time. They would have had to be big enough to hold a man to a cross with a good sized head so that the hand/wrist would not slide off the end. I doubt that they would have been as big around as a railroad spike, but they would have been as long.
Tradition says that 3 nails were used but some archeologists and historians propose that 4 were used.
it was 3 wasnt it?
It was 4, if it was 3, it would make John 19 verse 36 wrong

The cross was a common method of execution by the Romans for criminals during that time. The shape of the cross was likely chosen for its ability to inflict pain and suffering, as well as to serve as a public deterrent. It also carried symbolic significance in terms of the message of Jesus' sacrifice and redemption.
There is nothing in the bible about Jesus being hung on a cross by three nails. It only records the account of him being crucified -- nothing about the specific method used.
A horse farrier uses pincers to pull out the old nails in the horseshoe. Pincers are a type of pliers used for pulling out nails.
There were a total of three nails used on Christ, two on the palms and one on the legs. They may have been eight to ten inches long. -- answer -- They would have been iron nails. Their length is unknown.
3, Three rusty nails, nailed Jesus to the cross. One in each hand and one in the feet, according to Christian tradition and records.
I reckon so. I doubt if you could hammer wooden nails into wood, and copper would be a bit expensive. I agree, copper or bronce nails would cost very expensive and iron was a popular builduing material used by that time.
