To quote Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide, Chapter 53, Stairs `All carpenters who have tried to build stairs have found it (like boat building) to be an art in itself.' However, if you want to know a lot about the construction of stairs, Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide, Chapter 53 will probably tell you more than you want to know.
Short answer… maybe. Long answer… It is possible to use wood in commercial as well as residential construction. The driving factor is the "Building Type". Building Type is used to describe the types of building materials that can be used and where they can be used in construction. If you are building a house it would most likely be of Type V construction. This means that you could use any material allowed by the code to build your home. If you are building a gun powder factory you would probably build it using Type I or Type II construction. This would eliminate or reduce flammable materials and protect structural elements from flame or intense heat. Office buildings are built using a variety of construction types. You would have to know what type of construction your building uses and if that type allows wood on stairs. To verify in your specific circumstance, the use of flammable materials in stairs, I suggest that you contact an architect or you local Building Official at the local building department. Hope this helps! Terry
