UWC can stand for lots of things, but the most common is United World Colleges, a group of 13 schools and colleges that stand for using education as a force for positive change to foster a world of peace and sustainability. UWCs are a unique venue for education where people from around 70 different nations live and learn together in an intellectually stimulating environment. Running the IB programme, which was developed out of UWCs, the schools and colleges provide a world-class education as well as a transformative experience for all students. Financial support is provided on a needs basis. Students apply when they are 15 or 16, usually, from their national committee and more information is available from UWC.org. While I cannot say for sure the connection between UWC and Duke of Edinburgh, many if not all UWC applicants from Britain (UWC.org.uk) will have completed the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award and there are many connections between UWC and the British Royal Family over the years.
