It has been said that there is no bad time to attempt an escape, but some times are better than others. In World War 2 some Allied prisoners, including New Zealand's General Freyberg, escaped simply by jumping out of the truck that was taking them to the POW camp. It is also taught that escape attempts have a better chance of success soon after capture, as opposed to later when the captor is weakened and has been moved to a more secure place of captivity deeper within enemy territory.

A captor should consider escape when their safety is at immediate risk, such as when there is a lack of supervision, an opportunity to flee undetected, or when there is a breakdown in the captor's control. It is important to evaluate the potential risks and consequences before attempting escape and to have a plan in place to increase the chances of a successful escape.
