Proximity means closeness, the state of being proximate. It is a redundancy to use the phrase, "close proximity." I see it all the time used by supposedly literate people, and others not so. It galls me to see the language misused that way. I'm on a campaign to see it properly used.

Its a rough decription of non-exact closeness. As an example.. My Mom got nervous that I might damage something when I placed a cup in close proximity to my computer. Derived from "proximate" or "near." Very often misused in sentences as above by saying that a cup was placed close near a computer would be better said "...when I placed a cup too close to my computer." "Close proximity" in a phrase is somewhat redundant and superfluous because "close" implies "near" as well.

Examples of proximity could include how close two objects are to each other in physical space, such as the distance between two buildings or the placement of furniture in a room. In a social context, proximity could refer to how closely individuals are situated to each other, like at a crowded event or in a team meeting. Additionally, in a digital sense, proximity could relate to how near a user is to a particular location or point of interest using GPS technology.
