It is impossible to stop recoil.
It's a 1954 gun. Need to know more information, such as whether it has a matted or ventilated rib, any modification that have been done like the addition of a recoil pad, and above all else - condition. Digital photos would be a big help. sales@countrygunsmith.net
All my records indicate that a sweet sixteen never had a H prefix to the serial number? The only H prefix is for a standard weight auto-5 12ga.made in 1954.Please check your serial number again,as the serial number should not be on the recoil pad.
Factory or aftermarket?
Factory applied or aftermarket?
This gun was made in 1954 Value is too difficult to be accurate without seeing the gun. Condition which includes the amount of original finish and original configuration will determine value. Auto 5's with poly-chokes, compensators and recoil pads (other than Mag 12's) will reduce value. Recommend taking it to a gun shop for appraisal.
No, never. Browning did not make any recoil pads standard on any A5 except the Mag12. For an extra fee, Browning would install it for you at their shops in the US, but it is not factory and was not imported from Belgium with a pad.

Your serial number is missing a letter designation to be a Sweet 16. This number alone is for a Standard Grade 16ga made in 1930. Value is too difficult to be accurate without seeing the gun. Condition which includes the amount of original finish and original configuration will determine value. Auto 5's with poly-chokes, compensators and recoil pads (other than Mag 12's) will reduce value. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_value_of_a_Browning_Sweet_Sixteen
