Because it's only a single taillight I would first fully inspect and check the wiring harnesses and ground wire and connection for that lamp's circuit for causes one, four, and five listed above.
The "proper fix" is for someone who knows what he or she is doing to troubleshoot the nonfunctional circuit, find and identify the problem, and properly repair it.

On my W vauxhall corsa the dimmer switch is just under headlight switch (small scroll horizontal switch-like the scroll button on a mouse)
The black door handle inside is probably broken. Mine was and I replaced it with parts from ebay. Only about $12.00
