1940 vehicles did not have a VIN. They did however have a build plate attached to the vehicle somewhere. The location varies with manufacture.

Why is there no VIN number. All vehicles have a VIN number. The VIN is located in several places on the vehicle unless it is an antique vehicle. In the case of specialty vehicles or antique vehicles, usually to get physical damage coverage you will have to have the vehicle appraised and the rates will be determined by the value of the vehicle.

Toyota does manufacture vehicles in the US. If the VIN starts with 2J, it is made in Japan. If the VIN starts with 4T, then it is made in the USA.
It should be on the dashboard, visible thru the lower left corner of the windshield. That's been the standard location for VINs in vehicles for decades.
