Yeat's was alive during 1913 and 1916. He wrote both poems, therefore he should have a considerable interest in them.

In September 1913 he writes about how is is saddened of how Ireland has trned out. He critisises the middle class of that era for not appreciating all the past hereo's have done for then. He insults there intelligence saying nobody nowadays would dream of standing up for their nation.

In Easter 1916 rebel's from all over Ireland took hold of renound buildings in Dublin city to rebel against the English. The leaders of this rebellion were killed. Yeat's writes, and struggles to comprehend this. He asked for this loyalty to their country to happen but didnt realise the cost or bloodshed that came along with it. The poem is Yeat's struggling to deal with his many opinions of the situation.
