Jumpers can do a lot of things, some motherboards have many of them. Basically they are a manual switches, that can be closed by shorting them with a jumper cap. Some examples are, jumpers that set the CPU speed, or reset the BIOS memory.

∙ 16y agoEach IDE hard drive, you will see has a jumper. The jumper changes the drive from either a master to slave, or cable select.
Basically this means, that depending where on the ide lead your going to plug the drive into, the drive should be either master or slave etc.
Ie, if your going to plug the cable in in the middle, then change the jumper to slave. If your going to put the drive at the end, then change the jumper to master. If your unsure of where you want to put it, you can put the jumper as cable select (CS), although personally i always use master or slave.

∙ 9y agoBack when hard disk drives were using the IDE/EIDE/PATA interfaces, those pins serve to indicate what order the hard disks were installed. The primary options for those pins are single, master (primary drive), slave (secondary drive), and disk select (only some of them have them).

On a hard drive, you have options to set a jumper. It is a plastic piece that contact two pins on the plug side of the hard disk. This jumper specifies if the hard disk is Primary, Secondary, or Cable Select. If you select Primary, this is telling your computer to boot from this disk (Usually containing the operating system). Secondary is telling the computer that this drive is only for extra storage and cable select means your computer will determine based on the order of which it's plugged in. (Not recommended if you know what the drive is going to be used for)
