There is a story that the Komodo dragon was only discovered after WW1, when an aircraft came down in the waters around the islands, and the surviving pilot swam to Komodo Island. This is not quite true.

It is unknown when, exactly, the Komodo dragon was discovered, but the earliest reports seem to be from around 1910-1912, and they came from pearlers and fishermen. The existence of the Komodo dragon was not actually verified until 1926, when W. Douglas Burden, representing the American Museum of Natural history, led an expedition to Komodo, and returned with 12 preserved specimens and 2 living komodo dragons.

They are not extinct as of yet, but they are critically endangered. but there are at least 3,000 to about 5,000 Komodo dragons left on about 7 different continents.

There are only about 500 females left! So that makes danger for the breeding process.

Judging by what I know, it could be around 350 million to 400 million years old. The horseshoe crab, the American cockroach, coelacanth, and frilled shark are all 350 million to 400million years old. In wikipedia, it said the komodo dragon ate the stegodon, but right now, we need to find out how long ago the stegodon lived. I am guessing it is, as I said, 350 million to 400 million years old.

honestly they are not considered endangered YET, i hope they never do but you really cant doubt the inevitable, they were introduced by herpetologists in 1910, so before that we dont really know how they have lived. their conservation status in only on "vulnerable" right now, the status' go in order of closeness to extenction are

"extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, threatened, conservation dependent, nearly vulnerable, least concern." dont worry about population, they are doing there best to keep them with us.

The Komodo dragon was first documented in 1910 by Lieutenant van Steyn van Hensbroek who went to Komodo Island after hearing stories about giant lizards. He killed a dragon and sent the skin and several photographs to Peter A. Ouwens, director of the Zoological Museum and Botanical Garden at Bogor, Java, who eventually determined that the dragon was a monitor lizard. Several expeditions followed including an expedition led by W. Douglas Burden which captured 27 specimens and examined at least 70 individuals in 1926. There are approximately 4000 to 5000 living Komodo dragons in the wild.
