Rotor rooter is what immediately comes to mind, its allot cheaper to do than calling on your local plumber, and about half as costly. Plumber fees are expensive.

Will homeowners insurance pay for repair of broken underground sewer line?

I cannot think of any cause for a sewer line damage being caused by something that would be covered by a homeowners policy. It is probably maintenance and not an issue for your home insurance.

What are my options for protecting my sewer line?

Since a sewer line that connects to your septic tank is your responsibility, you may want to look into a sewer line repair program so you won't have to shell out $3500 to $4000 if something should happen to your sewer line. You can usually find them easily online or in your phone book for a low monthly fee. They repair leaky, ruptured or clogged sewer lines if anything were to happen such as blockages, mechanical failures, or even normal wear and tear. You can also install a backwater valve for further protection, and take the proper precautions to prevent sewer backups such as never pouring grease down the sink or drains, or using the toilet for garbage or wipes. These steps will ensure your protection and prevention from sewer backups.

What problems might occur if I don't keep my sewer lines clean?

The obvious and main problem (and reason to keep your sewer lines clean) is because a backed-up sewer line means that sewage can get backed up into sinks and bathtubs. This is unsanitary and a health hazard. A broken sewage line is costly to repair.
