Quite likely, yes; however, as the nation, and especially the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting struggle to search for answers to why this heinous act happened, many fingers are going to be pointed in many directions. The sad fact of the matter is that no one will ever know the real and complete reason that Adam Lanza did what he did.

People in the US, and in every nation of the world, are bullied to one degree or another every day. The fact that it happens, and that similar can be seen in the rest of the animal kingdom, is proof enough that it is hardwired into us. Everyone bullies, and everyone has been bullied. This is in no way a defense of the activity. It is simply recognition of its natural existence. The more important aspect of bullying is what we do with it.

What is key to remember here is that no one is ever responsible for what is done to them; they are however supremely responsible for what they do with it. And no matter how painful, no matter how scarred anyone is by the actions of another, it is never acceptable nor valid to blame anyone for your own actions.

Whether or not Adam Lanza was bullied is in large part unimportant. It may have been, or more accurately his reaction to it may have been an element in the crimes he committed, but it can never be blamed for them.

While bullying should never be permitted to continue when it is discovered, it is far more important, practically critical, that we as a society shift our focus from the actor to the receiver. Rather than fill up the media with incidents of bullying, we should be helping those who are bullied to learn how to more effectively deal with it and how to process their feelings as a result of it. Make stronger people, and there will be fewer problems.
