According to her own report, yes. Late in 1925, the year before she died, Annie wrote a summary of her life up to about 1890. It hardly had the volume and depth of your typical autobiography, but it's the best thing we have. She alleged that after spending time at Darke County Infirmary (a "poor farm"), she was taken in at the age of nine by a family on the premise that she would look after their infant son and be a "companion" for his mother. Soon, however, she was made to not only look after the child, but feed livestock, work in the fields, cook, clean, do the laundry, the ironing, etc. On top of that, she suggests that she was beaten, and stated that on one occasion, she was locked out of the house during a winter snow and nearly froze to death. There has been speculation as to whether she was also sexually abused as was common among ne'er-do-well girls in her circumstances, but she never mentioned it explicitly in any known record.
