China was defended by the Communists under Mao Tse Tung, and supported by the Soviet Union, and by the Nationalists under Chang Kai-Shek, supported by the United States. The Communists were the more effective of the two groups in fighting the Japanese, but the US and Great Britain sent thousands of soldiers to assist in the defense of China. China also had a small and ineffective air force, supplemented by British RAF and United States AVG aircraft and pilots.
