Dolly's heart sank. "I thought, 'Oh, no, that's already been a hit and that's what I'm leaving for my family.' It had nothing to do with Elvis, because hopefully he was disappointed too," she says. "But I just wouldn't let him have the publishing."

Actually, no. The closest a meeting ever came is when the Colonel (Elvis' agent) contacted Dolly to negotiate for Elvis to sing one of Dolly's songs. Because Elvis never sang a song he did not have fifty percent rights to, and Dolly does not give up the rights to her songs, they were not able to come to an agreement. They were not friends, but they were not enemies.
