The designation Hebrew is first used for Abram, distinguishing him thereby from his Amorite neighbors. (Ge 14:13) the Biblical evidence is that Hebrew (`Ivri) comes from the name Eber (`Ever), that of the great-grandson of Shem and an ancestor of Abraham. (Ge 11:10-26) Mandate of Israel: It is also possible that "HEBREW"comes from the name of the City of NI-IV-RU (UR). This was one of the main cities of the Sumerian Civilization. The descendants of Shem created it. Avraham and the Jews would then be the direct descendants of and the remnant survivors of Sumeria. The main Sumerian population was destroyed or vanished after Abraham's departure.

A:Enoch was part of Jewish legend, so to that extent he was 'Jewish'. Strict Jewish tradition would not consider anyone Jewish who was not a descendant of Judah, in which case Enoch was certainly not Jewish.

There are two parallel traditions of Enoch, one a descendant of Cain and the other a descendant of Seth, but the descendant of Seth is usually meant when we talk about Enoch. The two genealogies involving Enoch are so improbably similar as to be fictional. The names in the two genealogies are, although the exact order of Enoch, Irad/Jared and Mahujael/Mahalaleel has changed:

CAIN .............. SETH

Cain ................Cainan

Mehujael ....... Mahalaleel

Irad ............... Jared

Enoch ............ Enoch

Methusael ..... Methuselah

Lamech ......... Lamech

What we really have here is evidence of one original tradition that diverged and now forms of two separate traditions.

"Hebrews" (Ivrim) actually means descendants of Eber (Ever). Ever was an ancestor of Abraham (Genesis ch.10-11) and the earliest Hebrews were Abraham's uncles and cousins for several generations back. They were among the Western Semites and lived in northern Mesopotamia, near the confluence of the Balikh and the Euphrates.

Abraham (18th century BCE) was called a Hebrew (Genesis ch.14) because of his wider family.

Enoch (Genesis ch.5) lived long before any of the Hebrews.
