Of course Henry was an infamous king! He executed two of his wives and according to some historians was responsible for the deaths of some 70,000 people,[his subjects.] who he was supposed to protect! He was a liar and a thief and his word meant nothing at all.

Taken in the context of the time, Henry VIII ruled as he saw fit and correct, as did his followers and advisers.

With perfect hindsight, a different time and moral outlook it is easy to proclaim he was cruel and despotic. As were most leaders of the era.

It is naive to assign the ethical values of the 21st century to those that lived in the 16th.
