King Henry VIII was a very sick man and, if he was poisoned, it was self-inflicted by his poor diet and various ailments. The King faced and battled several different diseases and ailments that could not be properly treated as they are today. Historians and scientists have deteremined dozens of ailements. At 22, he suffered smallpox. At 33, he battled malara. At 44, he badly injured his leg at a jousting tournament, which then became ulcerated. Eventually, both of his legs became ulcerated and he could then not excercise, thus gaining mass amounts of weight. His diet also could quite possibly have caused untreated type 2 Diabetes. He suffered insomnia, sore throats, and migraines his entire life. King Henry also faced a mental decline as his life progressed, including paranoia, depression, loneliness, and ill-temepered mood changes. (These have been popularly attributed to a joust in which he was knocked unconscious). It has also been said that he sufferend several min-strokes before his death, leading to the belief that he had poor circulation and cardiovascular problems. The common myth that the King died of syphilis is actually very unlikely. While many of the symptoms exhibited by the King relate to this STD, the pus-ridden sores that come along with untreated syphilis were never found by the King's doctors. The medical community at that time were aware of syphilis and would have properly treated him for that had he exhibited all of the characterisitics. It is much more likely it was a combination of a battered immune system, mental distress, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

If the criminal is good at his job, it would be impossible to tell poisoned from non-poisoned food. The best way to tell is to have someone else try the food first, then see if they die. If they do die, it's probably poisoned.
