James Dickey was first and foremost a poet and his first widespread recognition was for such powerful poems as "Falling," "The Sheep Child," "The Firebombing," "The Performance." He won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1965 and served as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 1966-1968. But Dickey was also an essayist and critic, and his greatest popular fame was achieved as a novelist with "Deliverance," which was published in 1970 and subsequently turned into a film starring Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds. His other novels were "Alnilam" and "To The White Sea." Dickey wrote the screenplay for "Deliverance" and for a made-for-television production of "The Call of the Wild," as well as at least one documentary and a few other feature films that never went into production. Before he became widely known as a poet, Dickey worked in advertising, and at the end of World War II he also wrote the official history of his aviation unit. So, the answer in order of his priorities and the body of his work would be: poetry, fiction, criticism, screenplays and way down the list a bit of ad copy and a bit of history.
