Most assuredly he was, as Christ is a friend to all mankind no matter what they do or who they are. His friendship towards Peter and all of mankind knew no bounds. He chose Peter to lead the church after He ascended to His father in heaven, not because He loved him more but because Peter was chosen before the world was to occupy such a position.

When Jesus healed Peter's mother in law, (Matthew 8.14), the Bible says: And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. (Luke 4.39) She was simply being a good host. Jesus and the disciples were in her house and she was now able to wait on them as Jesus had healed her, so she did.
