What was Jesus overall attitude towards the disciples?

One of the mysteries of the Gospel of John is the identity of the disciple Jesus loved. Christians will wisely recognize that sufficient evidence exists to take this Muslim contention seriously, simply because it is Biblical. After Jesus has equipped His disciples with authority, He sends them out and charges them: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." (Matthew 10:5,6)

Why did Jesus identify himself as the Messiah?

According to Mark's Gospel, the first New Testament gospel to be written, Jesus was at pains not to call himself the Messiah. Throughout Mark, there are regular examples of Jesus admonishing both people and demons not to reveal to others who he truly was. It appears that the author was also careful not to have Jesus or his followers speak of Jesus as the son of God, perhaps because it would have been considered blasphemy among potential converts. Only outsiders such as demons, the high priest and the centurion present at the crucifixion could be used to make this claim. Peter, alone among the disciples, refers to Jesus as the Christ (Messiah), but is commanded to tell no one. When the high priest angrily demands of Jesus whether he is the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus refuses to answer. This paradox is widely known as the Messianic secret..We can understand the context of this secret by looking at the parallel structure of Mark, which may help explain why Jesus spoke of himself as he did. Parallel structures are literary sequences in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first, and were used in ancient times to develop themes that were otherwise hidden. In this structure we can see evidence of just how the author developed this and other themes:A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)D . The forty days in the wilderness as an allusion to Elijah and Moses (1:13)E . The people were astonished at what Jesus taught (1:22)F . Jesus casts out an unclean spirit (1:23-26)G . Pharisees took counsel with the Herodians how they might destroy Jesus (3:6)H . Demons, whenever they see Jesus, fall down and say that he is the Son of God.-- Jesus commands that they tell no one of this (3:11-12)I .. Jesus calls the 12 disciples (3:13-19)J .. Jesus rejects his own family: he has a new family, his followers (3:31-35)K . Jesus rebukes the wind (4:36-41)L . The demoniac, wearing no clothes (5:15), cries out that Jesus not torment him and Jesus sends out the demons (5:1-20)M . Jesus comes into his own country (6:1)-- Where he was brought upN . The people misunderstand Jesus and he can do no mighty work (6:2-6)O . Jesus sends out the disciples and curses those who will not receive them (6:7-11)-- in sending the disciples with authority and expecting all to receive them, Jesus is asserting his own authorityP . Herod thinks that Jesus is John the Baptist risen from the dead (6:14)Q . Herodias and her daughter conspire to kill John the Baptist (6:16-29)R . Feeding the thousands, and related miracles and discourses (6:33-8:21)S . Who do people say that I am (8:27)T . Peter affirms faith in Jesus as the Christ (8:29)U . Whosoever shall be ashamed of me: of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed (8:38)V . The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and scribes (8:31a)W . Be killed and after three days rise again (8:31b)X . Prophecy of second coming (9:1)- Jesus tells the disciples that some of them would not taste death until they saw the kingdom of God coming with power.B' .The Transfiguration of Jesus (9:2-3)C' .The voice of God from heaven, "This is my beloved son" (9:7)D' . In the matching event H', Jesus clarifies his divine status, saying that he is not God. In event S (8:27), Jesus asks, "Who do people say that I am," and the disciples say Elijah or one of the prophets - at this stage they do not mention that Jesus is the Messiah. Event S' gives the real answer by association through the pairing of the two events: The high priest asks, "Art thou the Christ [Messiah], Son of God?" The reader knows the answer, but no one could have accused the gospel of attributing this claim to Jesus himself or to the disciples. Later, in event T, Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah, or Christ, and Jesus charged the disciples to tell this to no man. In event T', we even have Peter deny Jesus three times. Jesus already knew that Peter would deny him, and says that he will be ashamed (event U), referring to himself as the Son of Man, a term he often seems to have used. Right on cue, event U' has Peter remember that Jesus said that he would be ashamed, and when he thought on this he wept.

What was John the Baptist's weakness?

Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?"John the Baptist is still not sure about Jesus. (He's in prison and is soon to die.) He sends his disciples to ask, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" Well, if he isn't sure after seeing and hearing the events at Jesus' baptism, then how can anyone else be?

Why did people think that Jesus was the Messiah?

People thought Jesus was the Messiah /Christ because of the signs/miracles that he did. John 7:31: But many in the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more miracles than this man has?" The Messiah was prophesied in the Old Testament scriptures and many Jews were looking for a messiah at this stage of their history. But the they were looking for someone to deliver them from Roman occupation. Simon Peter's brother Andrew believed Jesus was the messiah: John 1:40 One of them was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. John 1:41 At once he found his brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah." (This word means "Christ.") Later Simon Peter acknowledges Jesus is the messiah: Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Matthew 16:17 "Good for you, Simon son of John!" answered Jesus. "For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven. Demons knew: Luk 4:41 Demons also went out from many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. The Samaritan women knew: Joh 4:25 The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah will come, and when he comes, he will tell us everything." Joh 4:26 Jesus answered, "I am he, I who am talking with you."

Who did the disciples of Jesus believe he was?

We do not know what all the disciples believed individually, but according to Mark's Gospel we do know who Peter thought he was and we do know who others thought Jesus was. This is clearly shown in the Gospel's framework structure, which not only shows how passages are often linked sequentially, but also how they are linked in pairs across the entire Gospel:A . This creates emphasis for event P', when Jesus asks whether the baptism of John is from heaven or from man, and they can not answer. In event S, Jesus asks who others say he is, and the disciples say that some say John the Baptist and some say Elijah. Jumping forward to event S', the high priest demands to know if Jesus is the Messiah or the son of God. In event T, Jesus asks who the disciples say he is, and Peter says he is the Messiah. But in event T', he denies Jesus not once, but three times. On Peter's initial statement, perhaps the disciples thought he was the Messiah, but his later denial shows that not to be a very strong conviction.

What are the 3 call narratives in Marks gospel?

The 3 call narratives are... First, Jesus calls four ordinary citizens to follow him and be his disciples. They were Simon, Andrew, James, and John. We must notice that Jesus expected total commitment from everyone of them, even to the point of leaving their family. We too must place Jesus first and forsake everything else for his name. Second, Jesus goes up a mountain and finally selects his 12 apostles. These apostles were part of Jesus' close family, and he spent time with them. Through fellowship with Jesus, the apostles were transformed in heart, mind, and attitude. This prepared them for ministry. In the same way, we must spend time with Jesus first if we wish to serve him. Finally, Jesus calls his chosen 12 disciples and sends them out 2 by 2, telling them to preach about the Good News. He gives them no possessions, commanding them to trust that God will provide everything for them. We must learn that the journey of discipleship is to be shared with other believers and also that God will meet our needs for us.

Who came after Jesus?

Prophet Mohamed Second answer by a theologian: I believe you may have been asking who came after Jesus when he died. Mary Magdalene did. The Angels met her there and let her know Jesus had arisen. Mary ran to tell the disciples. Many people would say that the Prophet Muhommed came after Jesus and Prophet Smith came after him. However it is considered that they are false prophets by millions of Christians around the world. No one needed to come after Jesus because he is the Son of God and He had the victory over sin once and for all. He said God would send him back though he knew not when. We better be ready in case God sends him back in our time.

Why is Athena's dove symbol important?

Athena's Dove is a symbol of peace. Athena (the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology) has a dove which is a symbol of peace. In the Christian bible, God sends down a dove as his son Jesus is being baptized to say that he is proud of him showing those with him at the time that he is the son of God. The dove is also seen in Genesis( first book of the bible) when Noah sends out a dove to see if the flood waters have gone down. When it returns the second time it is carrying an Olive Branch, showing that the unrest in the world is over.

Who declares Jesus to be the messiah in Mark chapter 8 verses 27-35?

In Mark 8:27, Jesus asks who do people say he is, and the disciples answered that some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah and some say another of the late prophets. In 8:29, Jesus asked who the disciples say he is, and Peter said he is the Christ - the Messiah or anointed one. These statements are mirrored by the parallel structure in Mark's Gospel, when the high priest demands of Jesus whether he is the Christ, and then Peter denies Jesus three times (see events S and T, then S' and T') :A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)D . What can you learn from the story of the Last Supper?

From the original, brief account of the Last Supper in Mark 14:17-26, we learn that Jesus already knew that he would be betrayed and would die. This supper was the occasion for Jesus to say farewell to the disciples, when he said, "The Son of man indeed goeth (14:21) … I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine (14:25)", yet the disciples did not acknowledge what Jesus said. Someone reading the gospel as a whole, the way it was written to be read, would realise that the disciples had not understood the mission of Jesus, yet there is nothing in this short passage that actually tells us this. The theme of the disciples not understanding is achieved by association through the parallel structure of Mark, a literary sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first. In the following summary of Mark's parallel structure, the Last Supper forms a pair (pair R) with the miracles and related discourses that include feeding the multitudes on two occasions, a total of at least ten references to food and an underlying theme of the disciples not understanding (Mark 6:33-8:21):Jesus and the disciples had no leisure so much as to eatFeeding the 5000When Jesus walked on water the disciples were amazed, for they considered not the miracle of the loavesPharisees complain about the disciples eating with unwashed handsDiscourse - what goes into a man goes into his belly and does not defileGreek woman metaphorically begs for crumbs from the tableFeeding the 4000Disciples are hungry and have only one loaf of breadJesus warns the disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees and they reason, "It is because we have no bread," showing they do not understandSummary by Jesus of the two feasts, asking, "How is it ye do not understand?"This then links to the Last Supper through the following structure:A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8) B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)D . For example, when Jesus walked on water and the disciples were amazed because the considered not the miracle of the loaves, this looks back to the feeding of the five thousand and forward to Jesus' summary. When Jesus summarised the two feasts, his frustration was not just that they failed to understand the two miracles, but that they did not understand anything he did or said since the first feeding of the multitude. This lack of understanding is taken by association to the matching event (event R'), the Last Supper. In pair X, Jesus twice stated that that some of his listeners would still be alive when they witnessed the kingdom of God on earth. Event X' also immediately precedes the Last Supper, yet the disciples still did not understand. The story of the Last Supper tells us that Jesus already knew that he would be betrayed and would die. The underlying lesson is that as the life of Jesus came to an end the disciples still had not understood.
