Joseph E. Johnston was one of the top Confederate Generals. As the most senior of all the Generals who had resigned from the US Army to join the Confederates, he thought he ought to have been ranked first. But Jefferson Davis ranked him only fourth out of five, because his most recent service had been at a desk (Quartermaster General) and not in the line.

This caused animosity between the two for the rest of the war.
