Not likely. As the keeper of the disciples' money bag, it is likely he was somehow associated with finance or the merchant class. Nothing about his life before becoming a disciple is known beyond the name of his father, Simon. Iscariot isn't even likely his last name (he would have been called Judas bar Simon -- Judas son of Simon), surnames largely non-existent at the time, and was morw probably a descriptor of sorts.

Who was ju'das?

One of the 12 Apostles -- he betrayed Jesus ChristThe TreasurerWhat was Judas, and what office did he hold? John: "He was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein" (xii, 6).Judas was thus the first Christian treasurer. But why did Jesus, if omniscient, as claimed, select a thief for this office? Was he unable to conduct his ministry without the aid of one?see link on rightJudas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He betrayed Jesus for 30 peaces of silver.AdditionallyNote that a second apostle was also named Judas but he was the son of James that was mentioned in Luke 6:16. In the Gospel of Mark he is called Thaddaeus where this was his Greek name and Judas was his Jewish name.Another answer:The New Testament makes reference to at least six men called Judas. 1. The most-often mentioned is Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Jesus. (In reference to him, scripture almost always specifies "Iscariot," or reminds the reader that he betrayed Jesus, as in Matt. 27:3 and John 18:2.) His father's name was Simon (John 13:26).2. Another apostle, also known as Thaddeus or Lebbaeus, mentioned in the answer above, whose father's name was James (Luke 6:16). John 14:22 refers to him as "Judas (not Iscariot)."3. A half-brother of Jesus (Matthew 13:55).4. A prophet surnamed Barsabas, of the church at Jerusalem (Acts 15:22)5. A Jew of the city of Damascus (Acts 9:11)6. What position of trust did Judas have among the twelve disciples?

He was the group's treasurer. "...Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray Him, objected, 'Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.' He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it." (John 12:4-6 NIV)

Who was in charge of the common funds of the Apostles?

Judas John 12:4 - 6 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. John 13:28 -29 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.

What did Judas Iscariot do for a living?

Judas Iscariot may well have been what we call today an "entrepreneur"... which is sometimes humorously described as, "a person who will work at almost anything to keep from getting a job."He was an opportunist who hedged his bets on whatever he did.All we are told about him is that he: "...had the bag..." (John 12:6).This translates that he was in charge of the group's "finances" [whatever that may have entailed].In this particular passage, he feigns concern for the poor when he cared not at all for them [or anyone else other than himself]:"...Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."But one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray Him, objected, 'Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.'"He did not say this because he cared for the poor but because HE WAS A THIEF; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it." (John 12:3-6 NIV)Judas Iscariot was a thief.AnswerActually, we are told nothing of his occupation. The only reference of his character comes from John's gospel, and within context, John places an aside about Judas that reflects John's distain of someone who betrayed Jesus - a person who regarded John as his best friend. The fact remains that, while Judas betrayed Jesus, there is a distinct possibility that in carrying out the betrayal, and putting into motion the events that surround the crucifixion, Judas was instrumental in carrying out God's plan for salvation. Moreover, other gospels tell us that he suffered remorse for what he had done and, presumably would have received forgiveness as a result of that remorse. So, despite the negative rhetoric spoken about Judas since the events of 2000 years ago took place, nowhere in scripture or elsewhere does it say what he did for a living - it might have been illegal, or it might have been honorable; we just don't know.

Where does it say that Judas stole from the money bag?

The Bible mentions in the Gospel of John that Judas Iscariot was the one entrusted with the money bag and that he used to steal from it. Specifically, in John 12:6, it says that Judas would help himself to what was put into the money bag.

Was Judas tempted to lead the guards to Jesus?

No he was not tempted, he did so by his own choice. Judas was a thief and an unworthy man. He was greedy and contemptuous, yet Christ chose him as one of the apostles so that Gods plan could be fulfilled.
