The NIV says: "Leah had weak eyes...".

Different meanings can be derived from these words. One, being her "outlook" on life and things. Two, being a possible vision impediment or "weepy-eyed".

But, when taken in context with the rest of the verse... a more obvious meaning becomes evident through the comparison with the appearance of her little sister.

As a result, it may be that she wasn't necessarily "ugly" [although she could have been]... but perhaps "homely" or "plain-Jane." Certainly not the "raving beauty" that Rachel was.
