This is just another 'red herring' in this confounding case. Carroll was definitely a colorful character in his day but his biggest depravity would have to have been his drug addiction. Of the hundreds of Ripper suspects I find this one almost as amusing as the Jill The Ripper theory.

Lewis Carroll was never formally suspected as Jack the Ripper. The theory linking him to the crimes is based on speculation and circumstantial evidence, and there is no concrete proof to support the claim. It is widely believed to be a conspiracy theory without any substantial basis in fact.

His name has come up on suspect lists for the JTR crimes. But he was never a suspect according to Scotland Yard. Along with hundreds of others, who through the years have been named as possible suspects only because they were in London at the approximate time of the killings. The vast majority of Ripper suspects border on the ridiculous, such as the Jill The Ripper theory.

His name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. In the same year that he became a photographer he published his first piece of work under the name that would make him famous which was a very predictable little romantic poem called 'Solitude' that appeared under the authorship of 'Lewis Carroll'. He died 10 years after the ripper's killings and the theory goes when some one arranged sentences of his works and it would produce sayings that the ripper used in his letters.

Why did they blame Lewis Carroll of being Jack the Ripper?

How Lewis Carroll was ever added to the list of suspects in the Ripper crimes is a mystery to all who have studied the case. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to many of those on that list. Carroll just happened to be in London around the time of the Ripper murders, as were millions of others. The population of London in 1888 was about five million. Carroll was not Jack The Ripper, nor was the Queen's grandson Albert, Joseph Merrick the Elephant Man, or Sir William Gull, physician in ordinary to the Queen. Carroll was just a celebrity in London at the wrong time.
