Melchizedek was _A_ High Priest but not the first. By the way he is mentioned in Genesis it is apparent that he was filling a position that was already known at the time.
Genesis 14:18-20
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Hebrews 7:1-31 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
The scriptures make it clear, however that Christ is _THE_ High Priest:
Hebrews 5:4-6
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. [i.e. his Father called him - he didn't call himself]
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
So Melchizedek so distinguished himself in his priestly service that he was referenced when speaking about the Son of God, but he was neither the first nor the last to serve as a high priest.
Abraham to the High Priest Melchizedek the King of Salem.
18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
In the Bible, king of Salem and "priest of the most high God."

Melchizedek is a mysterious figure in the Bible, mentioned in the book of Genesis and Hebrews. He was a priest and king of Salem who blessed Abraham. Melchizedek's role is often interpreted as a prefiguration of Christ, representing a priesthood that is eternal and superior. This connection is emphasized in the New Testament to illustrate Christ's role as the ultimate high priest.
It is not known where he originated. Some consider him to be a theophany of Christ, based on the description in Hebrews. Melchizedek is understood to be from Salem which became to be known as Jerusalem check out Genesis 14 verse 18 Melchizedek was a high priest and the writer of Hebrews makes reference to Jesus and Melchizedek in the New Testament some scholars suggest Melchisedek was a pre-symbol of Jesus nature as the High Priest which links to Hebrews
GENESIS 14:18: "And Melchizedek king of SALEM brought bread and wine: and he was THE PRIEST of the Most High God."SALEM: [LIT- Literal Bible w/Strong's Definitions]: "SHALEM... the same as HSN8003; peaceful, an EARLY NAME for JERUSALEM: KJV--Salem. #shalom, See HSN7965"
He was a person who was the high priest of God most high. Abraham paid him 10% of all he had as tithing when he got his nephew Lot back after he had been captured by the 5 kings. Melchizedek used bread and wine in his worship service of God. Some people think he was translated to heaven, just as Enoch was, but the Bible does not actually say whether he was or not.
Ageless or Eternal. Paul makes an analogy to Melchizedek being Jesus as the King of Righteousness - and there is only one:Hebrews 7:1-3New King James Version (NKJV) Hebrews 7The King of Righteousness1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace," 3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
AbeAnswer:Biblically, there is none higher than Jesus Christ who is our eternal High Priest:Hebrews 5:10New International Version (NIV) 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
No Jesus was not a temple priest. After His death, burial, and resurrection He became the High Priest of God for mankind when they believe on Him. Jesus' priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek was the legendary king of Salem, mentioned in Genesis 14:18-20 as living in the time of Abraham. He was described as also being a priest of the most high God. It is implied in these verses that his God was the God of Abraham himself. Therefore it could be said that he was a priest of the religion that became the religion of the Hebrew people.
