I believe quite possibly he was ashamed of his skin disorder; he tried recommended treatments to help with the vitiligo and the other skin problem which reddens the skin tone.

Michael never really disclosed much of what he felt about either skin conditions except it is something that could not be helped.

That's a truth. There is no real cure for vitiligo, and lupus can affect parts of the body.
