The things worsened when in 1799 the Ottoman Empire declared war on France, and, though Napoleon succeeded in defeating or keeping at bay the new enemy, his army suffered losses that were not replaceable.
This situation led Napoleon to abandon the enterprise going back to France aboard of a frigate and to the surrendering of the 30,000 French soldiers of his army, who could return to their homeland only after two years of suffering.
