Oliver Cromwell was a Puritan, and his army was called the New Model Army. Opinions are divided as to whether he was a hero or a genocidal dictator.

The Irish in particular hated him as he brutally subjugated the Irish people and forbid them to practice their Catholic religion.

Some believe that he was a hero for ending the institution of absolute monarchy and promoted tolerance in religion (apparently excepting Catholics). He felt that God was guiding his military and political actions.

Cromwell's government was only successful as long as he lived. After he died, the monarchy was restored and his body was exhumed, beheaded and hanged.
