Pompeii is an Italian town, not far from Naples. It sits at the foothill of Mt.Vesuvius, which erupted in AD79 and completely demolished the town of Pompeii. The town was covered in a layer of ash and pyroclastic flow and many lives were lost.
Many years later, the bodies of the victims were preserved in the ash after Fiorelli, an archaeologist used a special technique to preserve the bodies using plaster.
Pompeii is now a thriving historical site that attracts many visitors each year.

It wasn't Mount Pompeii, it was Mount Vesuvius. It first erupted 18,300 years ago, but the one we most know of was when it destroyed Pompeii in AD 79.
