Yes, it was robbed. The Brinks men got wind of a plot to steal his body, so they got a man to become part of the plot. The men who were stealing the body were counterfeiters and had a friend who was in jail for counterfeiting. They wanted to ransom Lincoln for their friend's freedom. The night they stole his body they were arrested at the door of the mausoleum as they carried the coffin out. In getting his body out they damaged the mausoleum and Lincoln couldn't be put back where he had been. Instead his body was placed in the basement of the mausoleum until repairs could be made. There it stayed and stayed. When Mary Lincoln died 18 years later he was still there and the repairs weren't done. So, she was placed next to him and wooden planks placed on top of them. They were in the basement for 30 years before finally finding a final resting place in the repaired mausoleum .
