We don't know.

The Palace version says that she didn't meet James Hewitt till well after the birth of Prince Harry, but it has been revealed that they actually met before she was married.

This sounds like a cover-up of an affair, though the relationship seems to have been platonic at that stage. More likely, the Palace is just embarrassed that Charles started to neglect Diana almost as soon as they were married, because Camilla was never out of the picture.

She most certainly was. The public were not-so-subtly informed of this fact back in 1981 - when the aristocratic Lady Diana Spencer first entered the public eye as Prince Charles' perfectly blue-blooded, daughter-of-an-Earl English girl "with a history, but no past" - and Diana herself confirmed her status as Charles' virgin bride to Andrew Morton 10 years later, on audio tapes she secretly recorded in collaboration with his biography of her (Diana: Her True Story)

Because it's thirty years on, and a new generation is less shocked at a non-virgin bride.

It is certain that Diana was a virgin when she wed; she was young and innocent, and because of this and her prized virginity, she fit the role of bride of Prince Charles perfectly.
