Stephen Austin got to Mexico by entering Texas in 1821 when Texas was part of Mexico. I assume he got there on horseback.
General Austin went to Mexico and conquered Austin which was part of Mexico then. It became the south part of Texas. There is a city named after him.

Stephen F. Austin played a major role in colonizing the Texas area before it was part of the United Sates. The city of Austin was named after him to celebrate his efforts. He helped bring the first 300 families into the area. Those original settlers are now known as The Old 300. Together they helped build up Texas, which became a state in 1845.
