I wouldn't say he was intentionally 'mean'. He strived for perfection with every single thing, so everything his employees made had to be of the highest standard. So he may have gotten pissed that some people sometimes 'lowered' and 'tarnished' the reputation and standards of Apple. This may have come across as 'mean' because he was often quite blunt. Example:
Steve: What is MobileMe supposed to do?
Employee: [Tells Steve what MobileMe is supposed to do]
Steve: Well why the f*ck doesn't it do it then?
Steve Jobs announced to his employees in 2004 that he was being treated for pancreatic cancer.
Steve Jobs is no longer living, thus he is not anything. Did you mean "Why WAS Steve Jobs a perfectionist.
Steve Jobs was mean. Many people thought he was nice, but actually he was mean. Not very mean, but just mean
