Texas was originally part of Mexico until the 1836 rebellion that formed the Republic of Texas, which became a US state in 1845. Portions of land claimed by Texas became parts of other states, including eastern New Mexico, the panhandle of Oklahoma, and parts of Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.
