There are accounts of third class being locked below when the ship began sinking, but this was meant as something to keep them in one spot until the crew knew how to handle all of them (considering lifeboats were not available for half the people one boat). Unfortunately, the situation on the ship got so out of hand quickly that the crew forgot about them. There was no direct cruelty except crowd control if riots began.

There are also several accounts of crew members going down to the lower levels and guiding large crowds of third class passengers up to the boat deck.

It should also be noted that while people often think the third class had it the worst, 25% of the third class survived, while only 23% of the crew did.
