President James Abram Garfield was a unique individual and had qualities that few US presidents have or had. He was the 20th US president and was assassinated at the age of 49 by anarchist Charles Guiteau. Garfield was multi-lingual and spoke German to German immigrants. He was a profound Shakespeare scholar and he could translate ancient Greek and Latin using both hands at the same time.

James A. Garfield (1831-1881) was shot by Charles Guiteau, a frustrated would-be diplomat, on Saturday, July 2, 1881, less than four months after Garfield took office. Garfield died 11 weeks later, on Friday, September 19, 1881. Guiteau thought he deserved an appointment as ambassador to France and when refused ,he made such a nuisance of himself at the White House that eventually he was told not to come back again. He then decided to shoot the President.
They both died early in their first year as President. Harrison was an old man and died of pneumonia after only one month in office. Garfield was shot and died from the resulting infection after about six months in office.
