Vince Cable is a former Labour Party councillor and parliamentary candidate. He was a member of the party for 16 years between 1966 and 1982, until he broke away to join the Social Democratic Party, which merged with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats in 1988. He was, however, a Liberal Party member first, from 1963 to 1965, during his time as a student at the University of Glasgow.

In 1970, Vince Cable was the Labour PPC for Glasghow Hillhead, where he came second with 30.5% of the vote, losing to the Conservative candidate who won 61.3% - before the 1979 election he sought selection in Hampstead with the Labour Party but lost to Ken Livingstone, who went on to lose the seat. That was the last time he sought a Labour Party candidacy.
