Washington was as honest as most people, and most people do tell lies or half-truths in their lives. First of all, he was a politician and did use "spin" to accomplish what he needed and wanted. A good example is his report to Congress while he commanded American forces in the revolution. While they were camped at Valley Forge he wrote he needed food and other items, but the truth was the men were supplied with 3 pounds of meat and vegetables a week ( this is from the National Park service research at Valley Forge) and were housed in warm huts. He did this because if he told the truth to Congress they would cut his funds. This is just one example of how he worked. The idea that he "never told a lie" came from a book written a 100 years after his death. I think he would have had a good laugh from it.
